Nose Art

Click to view larger imageThroughout history human struggle has given rise to art. During World War II airplanes were personalized with nose art by those who flew them. Planes based furthest from major command centers were often the most creative and risqué. Bombers in the Pacific were among the best.

At the end of the war a young mechanic brought home photographs he had taken of B29s at the airfield on Tinian Island. Years later these were passed along to his son who wanted to preserve them, along with the memory of his father’s service.

The B29 is distinct with its unpainted surface and grid of windows over the cockpit. To capture the feel of this iconic plane, mats were cut to match the plane’s canapé openings with a photo in each rounded corner window - complete with gaskets. Cotton rag mats and UV filtering glass protect these precious images. A stainless silver frame perfectly matches the skin of the B29, completing the display. What better way for a family’s future generations to see what their grandfather’s young eyes saw before them.
