Biography of Kerry L. Kupferschmidt

Kerry KupferschmidtKerry Kupferschmidt has been a watercolor painter and enthusiast for nearly thirty years. He began drawing at an early age, while growing up in Maplewood, Minnesota. He discovered the wonder of watercolor while working toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Minnesota. Classes with Malcolm Meyers and Peter Busa inspired Kupferschmidt and he has been on a joy ride ever since.

He has taken workshops at Split Rock in Northern Minnesota and joined North Star Watercolor Society some time ago. Workshops and demonstrations at North Star have encouraged his development as a watercolor painter. Kupferschmidt had also received a Certificate in Drafting and considers his drawing skills essential to his current style.

Kupferschmidt_1Kupferschmidt became a full time watercolor artist and illustrator about 14 years ago. He started a business doing architectural illustrations for builders and developers. That business has enabled Kupferschmidt to continue painting daily.

During that time his watercolors have been in many juried shows and won awards at shows such as Northern Lights in White Bear Lake, North Star Watercolor Society, and Arts in Harmony in Elk River. His memberships include the Minnesota Artists Association, Burnsville Association for the Arts, and Old Town Artists in lower town St. Paul.

He began teaching watercolor and drawing classes in 1994 at Dakota Center for the Arts and he is now currently teaching at Hopkins Art Center. The variety of techniques available with watercolor continues to astound him. He emphasizes composition and the importance of transparent colors. Kupferschmidt also encourages students to have fun and build their confidence through lots of practice.

Kupferschmidt's style is realistic and he continues to explore several favorite themes including Northern Minnesota, small towns and architecture, Alaskan scenes and storefronts.
